On April 28th at 12.30 PM Greg, Pasang, Ang Pemba reached the summit of Cho Oyu! Currently Greg is descending on skis to Vicks camp 3 at 7450 m.
The team had to search for the true summit on the huge summit plateau of Cho Oyu, since the visibility was poor. After an hour they suddenly saw Mt. Everest, a proof that they were on the true summit of Cho Oyu. The GPS confirmed this by giving an altitude of 8196 m, just 5 m off the official altitude. While the team was on the summit plateau, radio contact was lost (as well as visual contact by binoculars), giving the basecamp team another nerve-wracking 3 hour wait until a sign of life from the trio was spotted. After Greg descended the first 100 m from the summit, radio contact was re-established and Greg was able to tell the great news by radio ! The most difficult part of the day is still to come: the ski descend to camp 3. As soon as Greg and the Sherpas are safely in their tents, we'll update again. Joost |
