| EXPEDITION
|
In the spring of 2004 Joost Schreve and Greg Nieuwenhuys of the Netherlands successfully attempted to climb and ski down the 8201 metres-high Cho Oyu in the Himalayas. They took on this challenge without the use of supplementary oxygen. Cho Oyu straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet and is the world's sixth highest mountain.
Greg reached the summit of Cho Oyu on 28th of April 2004, and made the first Dutch ski descent of an 8000 + peak. Joost had to back down from just 180 meters below the summit, because of a severe, altitude-related eye problem, after reaching 8020 m during the first summit attempt. His eye fully recovered 2 months later.
Appart from the climbing/skiing success, the VICKSpedition SKI8000 was a great media success. Thousands of fans followed the expedition via the website, which was updated daily via satellite. Moreover, Dutch national TV, radio and newspapers covered the expedition on a regular basis. On the day after the successful ski descent, National TV station SBS6 showed moving images of the ski descent and Dutch largest newspapers De Telegraaf and Het Algemeen Dagblad featured large, full-color summit pictures.
